Persephone / Kore (We all have darkness) 🌸💀🌸
She was just an innocent girl before she had become the queen of the underworld, through her abduction by and subsequent marriage to Hades, the god of the underworld. He tricked her, giving her some pomegranate seeds to eat in the underworld, so she was obliged to spend a third of each year (the winter months) there, and the remaining part of the year with the gods above.
She’s also the goddess of springtime, flowers and vegetation. So I portrayed Persephone half shining, lit, with pomegranate flowers in the background, and half obscured, in the shade.
I have always been struck and inspired by this contrast between light and darkness.
I think we all have a dark side, even if we hide it.
“Rare” (new single and album too) by Selena Gomez has been an inspiration for my portrait of Persephone: I was listening to it, both when I got the idea and while I was drawing and coloring her.
